Welcome to Ask the Expert: Dashboards and DataFrames

This is the home for our first Ask the Expert (AtE) session. Post your questions on Dynamic Dashboards and DataFrame objects below, and Jack Lacava, Senior Solution Consultant at OneStream, will get back to you with a video answer right here in this space.

Jack's guidance for what to bring:

"Ask anything about implementing Dynamic Dashboards or using the new DataFrame objects in your rules!"

How this works

  1. Post your question as a new reply in this space. One question per post keeps things easy to track and answer.
  2. Ask as many as you'd like — there's no limit. This space is open now through end of day Friday, September 25.
  3. Jack will reply to your post with a video answer, right in the same thread.
  4. We'll do our best to get a video answer to every question — the more specific and implementation-focused your question, the better your odds of a great answer.

A few tips for a great question

  • Include context: what are you trying to accomplish, and what have you tried so far?
  • If it's a Dynamic Dashboard question, mention what you're building or what's not behaving as expected.
  • If it's a DataFrame question, share the rule type and what you're trying to do with the object.
  • Screenshots or snippets of your rule/dashboard setup help Jack tailor the answer.

What you get for participating

Post a question during the window and you'll earn the "Ask the Expert - Participant" badge for your community profile.

Questions about this space itself?

I really want to understand and start using Assemblies, but every time I begin working with them, I run into gaps in my knowledge that block me, and I end up going back to the traditional approach.

Could you show us how to build a dynamic dashboard based on Security Groups? The idea would be to use the same dashboard, but dynamically change a few components, such as Combo Boxes and Cube Views, depending on the user's Security Group.

Also, I recently tried to use an Assembly to calculate and display in a Cube View the variance between two scenarios, based on the scenarios selected in Combo Boxes. I ended up building it using the traditional XFBR approach, but I would like to understand how this could be done using Assemblies instead.

There are a series of Tech Talks on the topic of dynamic dashboards.  Search for those as they walk through different use cases and will give you some foundational learning on the topic.
